Living In A Jar

We won't get far, flying circles inside a jar.
- Death Cab for Cutie

Listening to this song makes me think that we so often are doing this. We fly around a small confined space looking out at the world and not understanding why we can see it but can't reach it.

The worst part is that so often we confine ourselves you these jars. We are scared of what will happen if we leave the safe confines of our comfort zone. For some of us it's that we don't believe in ourselves. For others it's that they're scared of what others will think of them.

I think this happens not only in relationships but it all aspects of our lives. We're scared to apply for that big internship/job because we may get turned down. We're scared to move to a new city because we don't know anyone. Or go to a college your friends aren't going to.

Let me be the first to say that I have spent much of my life inside of a jar. I convinced myself that the unknown was something to be frightened of. What I've learned is that stepping off into the unknown can be a beautiful thing!!

My unknown was going to school 3 hours from home where I didn't know anyone. But going for that adventure has taught me so many things and introduced me to so many incredible people I would have never otherwise met!

So I encourage you to look closely at your surroundings and see if you to are limiting your opportunities and potential. If you are do something to change that! I challenge you to go outside of your comfort zone and see what can come of it!

If you do please let me know about it. I would love to hear your stories!

My Wonderful Weekend

It seemed like this weekend went by soooo quickly. Because of President's Day I didn't have school today so I got to spend Saturday, Sunday, AND Monday with my family. I had such a great time with them I hate having to leave.

The best part about family is that you don't really have to be doing anything to have fun.

Here's a little recap for you all!!

Saturday: Sister and I went shopping and bought new make up at Sephora. When we got home Aub dolled up Emy, our older sister with the new make up we got.

Here she is with her make up finished. She was so excited.

Her is Emy with her baby sisters!

And here is Aubrey and I with our matching VS shirts.

Overall it was a successful trip home. I wish I could have spent more time with my little brother but I am thankful for all the fun I got to have with my sisters. I love them more than anything.

Hope your weekend was as awesome as mine!!

Dear Heart, Love Your Head

I have a question for you all. Why do our hormones continue to tell us we like someone even after we are 90% sure there is no chance of a relationship? I blame this on my hormones because surely my brain knows better than to set me up for failure. But my heart it doesn't care it only wants what it wants.

The worst dilemma to be in is liking someone, they know that you like them, yet they don't really do anything about it. You KNOW that this obviously means nothing is going to happen between you too.

Yet for some reason you still cling to that small hope that maybe they really "aren't ready for a serious relationship right now." (This is still doubtful.)

Is it that we crave love and affection SOOOO much that we will figuratively throw our heart out into moving traffic in the hope that we will make it to the other side and be in love with someone that loves us back?

Well what I have to say to this is that sometimes our heart needs a good smack from our head. Stop wasting your time and feelings over someone that you know it won't ever happen with. Even if something were to happen the fact that they are falling all over themselves to be with you now shows that they are clearly not worth your time.

I really really badly need to take my own advice. Hopefully I will take it soon before I end up getting hurt sending out all my feelings and getting none in return.

I strongly believe that when you find "The One" they will also have that innate sense that you too are extremely special to their lives. If the person you are craving isn't sensing that, despite your attempts, cut your loses and move on to bigger things!

So I will leave you with a lovely Journey song that describes this situation moderately well:

What's wrong with single?

Hey everyone! Be sure to check out my guest post I did today on Classic+Glam for Halle!

So Valentines Day is here and I am celebrating it sans boyfriend. But I'm not upset about it! In fact I'm thrilled that I get to celebrate it with the people I really love!

But ever since it turned New Years it seems like everyone has been talking about the Day of Love and how they are spending it single or with their special someone. It seems to be there is a huge negative connotation around being single.

What I want to know is, what's so wrong with single?? Why is it that we feel like failures because we don't have significant others just yet?

Well I am here to tell you that it is ok to be single! (It's ok to be in a relationship too.)

We are taught our whole lives that we are the best at everything. In every sport we get a trophy or rewarded just for participating. Our parents tell us we can be whatever we want to be. The problem is someone we grow up and this "coddling" stops. But we don't know how to deal with it.

Not being the best or the same or having a boyfriend doesn't mean we have failed. It's just life and we shouldn't feel like we have done anything wrong because of it.

So this Valentines Day, if you are spending it single then live it up and celebrate all those special people you love like your family and friends or maybe your puppy.

When you stop looking for love it will find you so start living your life without worrying about your relationship status!

The Scary L Word: Love

As a single woman I tend to gravity towards other single women in my real life, twitter, and blogging. One thing that all of us have in common is that we are obsessed with our singlehood. It is probably one of the biggest things we talk about. How we wish that perfect guy would show up. How we don't need a man and we're happy to be single. How we're lonely.

The thing is that I wonder what many of us would do in the situation if we actually found this elusive "perfect guy." Would we know what to do or would we be to scared??

While love sounds great on paper it is pretty frightening in real life. With love comes the possibility of rejection, heartbreak, and tears. But also the possibility of real happiness, fulfillment, and the enjoyment of companionship.

All of this leads me to wonder if in reality we are scared of love!

There are so many opportunities that present themselves that we choose to ignore for one reason or another but what we have to ask ourselves is, is that the real reason you won't commit or is it because we are frightened of losing ourselves or getting hurt?

It is ok to be scared of falling in love but fear shouldn't stop us from pursuing it. So I challenge you the next time you turn down a guy that seemed like he could fit well with you think about the real reasons you are doing it. You might be surprised!!

What you DIDN'T do wrong.

I recently had a conversation about how upset girls get when a guy breaks up with them or doesn't want to see them anymore. The question that comes to mind is always "What did I do wrong?" or "How could I have fixed this?"

Most often though, at least in his opinion, they did absolutely nothing wrong. He says that the saying it's not you, it's me, can apply in a lot of cases.

When we first met someone we instantly make a judgement about them whether we want to or not. We decide if we like the way they look or the way they talk or laugh. From there we begin to break everything else down. The way they hold their fork. The way they try to open packages by pulling them apart instead of just tearing them open. (These are real reasons he has been annoyed by girls!)

We can't help but find all the little things that just bug us. We do this with everyone regardless of if it's someone we are romantically interested in or not something about everyone annoys you.

The problem is most of the time people aren't going to tell you what these annoyances are. They will tell you it's just bad timing, they're to busy, they just don't think your personalities are compatible. When really it may of just been some weird thing that annoyed the other person and it was nothing you could really do about it.

So I guess when the time comes that someone just doesn't feel you like you are feeling them you shouldn't be asking yourself. What was it that I did wrong? Was it the text I sent at 6AM that said my life would be incomplete without you? Or was it the fact that I call his mom everyday without him know?

Ok I was just kidding about those. But chances are there is no need to beat yourself up about what is wrong with you because it is probably something wrong with HIM. So just let it go and find someone that may have 10 things they hate that you do but 100 things they love that make them stay.

How Far Would You Go?

How far would you go for what could potentially be love? As I talked about in my post The Boy She Meet Online, meeting people online isn't that taboo anymore. So does this mean that we have a greater chance of finding our soulmate than we ever did before?

When I was younger (And way to into deep thinking!) I used to worry that the love of my life could be across the world where I could never possibly find him. But now that has become much less of a problem because it doesn't matter if he's across the world, or the country because through the internet I can still find him.

But how far would you go for this chance at love? Would you fly half way across the country to meet a stranger in the hopes that they could be your perfect match?

I mean I suppose you were answering that question yes when you began to talk to someone that you knew was far away. But what if it is simply the glamour of falling for a stranger that attracts you more than the actual compatibility.

I realize I've just asked a lot of questions and have given absolutely zero answers. But the thing is that I don't have any answers to give you just yet.

Maybe it's being scared of taking a chance or even of something actually working, of actually falling in love with someone that holds us back from doing crazy things. I constantly encourage you all to take chances and do things you never dreamed you would do, so many it's time I took that advice for myself and finally did something crazy.

This gives me a lot to think about... I apologize for the nonsensical rant but I appreciate any thoughts you may have on the matter!!

Dear Former Boyfriend

I wrote this one week after my break-up. It makes me so happy to know that I was this sure of myself and that I still feel the exact same way. I just thought it would be nice to share with you all.

Dear Former Boyfriend,

I loved you and I was willing to be with you the rest of my life… IF you could change just a few things. But those few things are who you are and what if I don’t like the person you become.

Even though you took away so much from me; my family, friends, most importantly my self-worth I do not hate you. I hope that you gained from me as much as you took.

Realizing that you were not my burden to bear was the most freeing feeling in the world. I am free to be myself, love myself, love whoever I want too. I just want to thank you for teaching me who I am and what I want out of this life. Though it is so much more than you could ever offer me.

Good bye forever,
Freed Spirit

It's Raining Men

Why is it that as you soon as you've decided to stop looking and give up on boys that they suddenly start a feeding frenzy? At our loneliest most single moments boys don't even notice that you exist. But when you have a guy on your mind that is actually interested in you, suddenly you become the most amazing girl in the world.

I feel like content-ness with your current situation is like blood in the water to boys. They smell it on you and they want a piece of it.

For instance, a boy that I liked very much about 3 or 4 months ago is now wanting to hang out with me! 3 or 4 months ago I would have been absolutely ecstatic to hang out with this boy. But now as he tells me I need to come to his room because he's already in bed naked, (YES, he actually said that) I am debating whether or not I want to be that girl.

Honestly I feel like if you didn't want me then, then why the hell should I want you now? I'm still the same girl I was but I don't want to be anyones seconds, thirds, fourths, or whatever I would be.

It must be this newfound confidence that has become the powerful trigger to attract all these men to me.  But as I would encourage ever girl that's single out there to do: Don't be with someone that won't care about you in all times, the good and the bad.

You need to have respect for yourself first if you want any guy to respect you. And I truly doubt that boy anixously awaiting my arrive in the nude has zero respect for me. Which is why I politely declined and laughed my head off with my roommates about it.

Love yourself first girls!

The Vow: Our Current Obsession

So it's no secret that literally every girl on the planet is obsessing over The Vow. Even my room mate that is the biggest tomboy ever wants to watch it!! This thrills me since she always shakes her head at me when I watch The Notebook and Pride and Prejudice over and over and over....

It's amazing that women are already OBSESSED with this movie even though we haven't even seen it yet! Previous Notebook star Rachel McAdams is plays the wife of Channing Tatum that loses her memory. So then he has to be the most fabulous husband in the world and make her fall back in love with him.

Surely this isn't something we haven't heard before. Heck, in The Notebook Noah has to make Allie fall in love with him everyday again. But what is that makes this movie so different then the mountains of other romances we are bombarded with everyday.

Channing Tatum has been in other movies so why is The Vow the magic movie???

This is the only conclusion I can come too. They have excellent timing. It's right before Valentines Day and all of us single women are looking for a way to fill our craving for romance and what better way then a desperately sad, hopelessly romantic love story?

All I can say is bravo whoever planned this because you have got us hooked! How many of you guys plan on watching The Vow?? My girls and I are doing it as our Valentines Day outing!!

Basket of Broken Eggs

In a recent conversation I was having with a guy friend he told me something so true, "All you girls put all your eggs in one basket and when shit starts to go sour you freak out." Not only did it entertain me immensely but I realized it was also so true!!

It got me thinking that as girls we do put all our hopes in one thing, usually one guy, then when it doesn't work out we are crushed. Why do we constantly do this to ourselves? We obviously learn that it's not good idea the first time it happens, yet we consistently do it over and over again.

What is it about us as women that makes us consistently do things that we know are bad for us? We date the jerks. We forgive the cheaters. We trust the players. Yet almost every time exactly what we knew would happen, happens.

I think it's that all of us try to believe in the good in people.

We think every frog has the potential to be our prince charming when the truth of the matter is that a lot of them are just frogs.

But while we continue to let ourselves get hurt by "putting all our eggs in one basket" I honestly can't say I wouldn't want it any other way. Sure all my eggs may get broken when he turns out to not be as amazing as I thought but I wouldn't want to miss out by not giving everything my all.

I believe in living life to the fullest and that means putting my all into everything I do. Holding back because we're scared of getting hurt only hurts us more in the long run.

So I challenge you to try and give everything your all be fearless! We have to hurt to feel the high of real unconditional love.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words But....

We've all heard the saying actions speak louder than words. But just because we don't necessarily go through with our actions doesn't mean that our words don't still hurt. Sometimes we think we are saying things in private or even just in our thoughts. But our feelings always have a way of coming out.

I recently unintentionally hurt someone and their reputation by words that I thought would never get back to them. Every action has a equal reaction. So even when we say things that we don't truly mean someone can still get hurt.

All I can say is think always before you act. Women have a bad tendency to let their emotions take over and do the thinking for them but don't forget to still use your brain even when you are upset!!

That's all I have to say for you guys today. Hope you can learn from my mistakes!

The Boy She Met Online

Ok if you recognize the title The Boy She Met Online as being a lifetime movie that is about, wait for it.... about a girl who met a boy online, then you are amazing!! I am a huge lifetime movie fan mostly because they give titles that say directly what they are about. But this post is not to talk about how magical that movie was (which is was). This post is to talk about the frightening yet interesting world of online dating.

I have to admit I absolutely love the couple on the eharmony commercials. They seem so happy and believable!! I realize that the couples probably are all actors that have never met that person before but let me just pretend that it's real.

I know that online dating used to be considered a shameful thing to do but with our increasingly technological world it's starting to make more sense.

Heck, I am only 20 years old and have only been single for 5 months (Wow! Had no idea it was that long.) but online dating is starting to look kind of appealing. Not saying that I will do it but if I can find a guy as hot and sincere seeming as the ones on the commercials I'll give a shot.

So for those of us on the fence about online dating I have listed the five reasons to GO FOR IT and the five reasons to DON'T DO IT.

GO FOR IT

1. Easy way to meet lots of singles
2. Easily tell if they are gansta or not.
Ex: "Wat ^ gurl? U lokn fly." Reply:...... (don't reply to that!)
3. Find people with similar interests.
4. They are putting their profile online too so you won't seem that desperate!
5. Narrow done by qualities you want

DON'T DO IT

1. They may not actually be a single
2. They may not be an attractive, wealthy 26 year old man
3. They may not be a man at all....
4. People are different online than in person
5. OK they could be major creeps

So clearly a lot of people have had success with online dating and you may be one of those people!! Just decide what will fit your lifestyle best. And ALWAYS be safe when meeting strangers in real life. Always tell your friends/family where you are going. Meet in a public place. Never let them pick up. Set up a check in time with a friend to tell them everything is ok.

If you choose to venture into the world of online dating just be sure to stay act like a classy lady and not a crazy one like this girl.

Enjoy!!!

Compliments from a Brother

For this story to make sense I must first let you all know that I'm a small town girl from a primarily white community. The first black kid we ever had in school wasn't till high school so moving to Kansas City was a major culture shock to me. I'll be the first to tell you that I think everyone is equal black, white, or purple we're all the same when you turn us inside out. But there are some definite cultural differences in what lingo we use and what is socially acceptable.

My campus is probably a mix of as many whites as blacks. And let me tell you I am just now getting used to these daily ego boosts. I love walking through the lobby of my dorm and having boys tell you how great you are looking. It's amazing, white guys take note!!

But sometimes we get lost in translation on some of the compliments. For instance we had a discussion today with my friend that I will call J about a compliment he gave us.

J said that one of my girls was thick and she took that as being called fat! So of course she got upset and was horribly offended that he called her fat. The funny part was that he meant it as a compliment. When it comes to black boys being called thick is a good thing.

Here's how he explained it: Guys don't want a girl that's to skinny. She has to have some meat on her bones (aka a booty) and that means she's thick but it's hott!!

Growing up I've always been taught thin is pretty but honestly I kind of like this meat on your bones philosophy. I wouldn't consider myself a girl with body image issues but I will admit I have felt the pressure to be a skinny minnie. I love that there is an entire race of people that appreciate women for being real and having real bodies!

Not to say that we shouldn't be healthy but 100 lbs isn't healthy for a lot of girls so they shouldn't have to feel like they need to meet that standard.

I guess overall I just wanted to say that I appreciate guys appreciating me every once in a while regardless of race or whatever. It just so happens that black guys do it more.

So when you get a compliment, even if you don't quite understand it, take it and say thanks and let it brighten your day!

Shouting on Mute: Why I Blog

Sometimes doesn't it feel like you are screaming to the world but your voice is on mute. It is as though no one can hear anything you are saying. They walk by completely unaware of your existence. I think this is the main reason I started writing when I was younger.

My very first diary entry dates all the way back to 4th grade but believe me most of that writing was not worth reading.

Since I started this blog I've had a lot of friends ask me what do you write about and why do you do it? The answer to the questions isn't always short and simple. I guess that basic answer is I write about my life as I see it and I do it for myself in the hopes that I can inspire, help, or at least entertain others.

The long answer is that it's comforting to know that we are not alone in the world. By writing my thoughts down I can connect with others that feel the same way I do. It's a beautiful thing to find like minded people in this world.

My original intention was for this blog to be a grieving process for my past relationship but other a few posts I wasn't really happy with I realized I had so many more things I wanted to say and talk about. I didn't want to be limited to rehashing the past over and over.

If you want to know what I write about I can tell you that I write about my thoughts while trying to be heartfelt, humorous, and leave you with a little lesson.

Hopefully this will help you better understand where I'm coming from and encourage you to write down your thoughts!!

Thanks for listening to my soap box rant. It's very much appreciated.

Zooey Deschanel: Making Quirky Cool

If you have ever seen Zooey Deschanel in her latest show New Girl you can probably guess exactly what this post is going to be about. Even if you have seen her in anything else she is in Yes Man, 500 Days of Summer, The Happening, and Almost Famous you'll understand that she is probably the cutest quirky girl there is.

But what I love about her is that she girls the awkward girl a fighting chance! Not only is she known for her quirkiness on screen but also the fact that she's gorgeous and such a likable character.

As a girl or even just a person that would like to fit in, in society I can understand the pressure to be "normal." I've never considered myself to be sexy or suave so I feel like it was a major struggle through my early teens to try and be what I was "supposed to be."

Laughing to loudly, being clumsy, telling those dead end stories that aren't so funny, these are all things that I tried to hide because I didn't want to be weird. What I think Zooey has done is make all those things that would seem out of place desirable qualities.

Guys now openly appreciate and admire girls with a little extra pizzazz. Which means there is hope for girls like me and I'm sure many others!!

So let this be my official declaration that awkwardness is in!!

Take a page out of Zooey's character, Jess's book and cry while watching Dirty Dancing over and over and over and over.... Make up a song to sing about everything. Most of all just be yourself and don't be afraid of what that is!!

Keeping it Classy at the Club

While the title of this post may seem to be an oxymoron it in fact is possible to be classy at the club/bar. Many girls don't really make any sort of attempt to have any class at all which accounts for why we have such a negative perception. For those girls that really just want to go dance and have fun here are some tips to act and look classy at the club/bar.

Dane Cook's: I just wanna dance skit. Sooo true!!

  • Dress how you would like to be treated- The problem with so many girls that go to the club is that they dress like hookers. If you want men to just treat you like a piece of meat or you're looking for a one night stand then by all means displaying all the goods is the way to go. But if that's not the impression you want to give off then don't dress like it is. Simple as that.

  • Sloppy drunk is never cute- After that 5th shot of tequila you may feel like you look like a million bucks but chances are you're not looking nearly as great as you think. You will either embarrass yourself or just attract the wrong type of guys. It's totally fine to be drinking but make sure to know you're limit so that you don't become sloppy.

  • Never, I repeat NEVER go alone- Clubs and bars are full of strangers that probably mostly have bad intentions. When you mix this with alcohol you have a dangerous combination. The rule I have with my girls is that we come together, we leave together, no exceptions. Unless of course it's a boyfriend or someone you already have know. But leaving with a stranger sounds like something you'll hear on 60 Minutes the next night.

  • You are not obligated to dance with anyone- The social etiquette at a club or bar is much different than at most any other social setting. It's ok to just approach a girl with no conversation or even interest shown from her. This being said it's totally ok to just deny a guy with no explanation. So don't feel bad about hurting their feelings.

  • Boys will go as far as you let them- This not only applies to the club or bar but also to most any situation with men. You are in control of you're own body so never let someone force you to do anything you don't want them to do even if it's just them feeling you up. You can say no at anytime!!

While I feel like most of these things are common sense a lot of girls seem to ignore them and then complain about not getting respect from boys. So just some helpful hints for you all. But remember if you call yourself a classy lady you better act like one at all places public!!

Cover it Up to Class it Up

One of my biggest pet peeves is that women complain so much about men disrespecting them when they haven't done anything to earn their respect in the first place. First impressions are everything not only in professional situations but in life in general.

Fact: People will judge you by your appearance.

Because of that you hold the key to how they will make their decision and a lot of it will be based on how you are dressed. So here is my little twist on the golden rule:

Dress yourself like how you want others to treat you.

I can tell you for a fact that people will respect you more and take you more seriously if you don't walk around with massive cleavage. As women we are already fighting an uphill battle to be respect by men and society. When we dress provocatively we may get attention but definitely not in the right way. Men stop listening to wait we have to say and start thinking with the head below the belt. There is definitely a time and a place for this but everyday life is not it unless you are a hooker.

This all may seem like common sense but I think it still needs to be said. Sometimes we say one thing but don't match our actions. So before you go to class, work, or just to hang out with friends think about what message you are sending with your outfit and is it the one you want to send??

It's Not Over

It's not over, it's not over. It's never over. Unless you let it take you. It's not over, it's not over. It's never over. Unless you let it break you.
- Secondhand Serenade

I literally listened to this song on repeat for days underneath my fuzzy pink blanket when I broke up with my first boyfriend. It really makes me think about if it is ever really over. Do we ever completely fall out of love with someone? And if so does that mean that we never truly loved them in the first place?

Looking back on my past relationship I think about all the promises that were made. The promise to never leave, to never stop loving. At the time it felt so real and it was an honest promise. But in retrospect it makes me wonder if I'm still continuing to keep this promise or if I always knew all along that I really wouldn't keep it.

I'm at that point in singledom where I'm over the boy but not yet over the relationship. Spending three years of your life with someone is difficult to erase from your memory. Some mornings I wake up and I forget that we're not together anymore. Or I have a dream that we're together and he's changed.

It's funny how falling in love happens so quickly while falling back out of love takes so much time and effort. I guess that's because were love easy and are always fearful of letting go, even of bad things.

I remembered learning in school that you should never touch something hot with palm because your muscles reaction to heat is to close around it. Bad relationships are like that. Even though it hurts it's so hard to let go of them because it's your reaction to hold on.

The lesson to be learned here is that your burns from holding on may never truly heal. You will always be left with scars but we learn to get over them as much as we can and love someone else. The memories of past loves will always linger but we grow from them and become stronger in the future.

Just my daily rant for the day!! Made me feel better to get it out.
